Topic: Building Bridges – Collaborating for Patient Care Between Occupational Therapists and Dental Practitioners

This dynamic and informative presentation will highlight the importance of collaboration between general dentists and occupational therapists for patient care.
Learning objectives include:
– understanding the dental and occupational therapy (OT) management of patients with neurodivergence
– the use of story boards and behavioural support management plans
– how the OT and special needs dentist (SND) world overlap with each other and how each approach can complement the management of patients with special needs.

About Lydia:

Navigating the world of special needs dentistry is often complex. Dr Lydia See is dedicated to making oral health care accessible for all individuals with special needs. She enjoys simplifying complex processes for dental, medical, and allied health professionals, ensuring they are well-equipped to manage the oral health of this population.

Since graduating from the University of Western Australia, Lydia quickly discovered her passion in special care dentistry, dental education, and community dentistry. She completed a Master of Geriatric Dentistry at the University of Southern California and a Diploma in Special Care Dentistry with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She then became a dental specialist after earning a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Special Needs Dentistry) at the University of Queensland.

Lydia’s clinical experience spans public, hospital, and private clinical practice. She has actively contributed to tertiary education and research, with extensive experience in dental volunteering and working with not-for-profit organisations. Outside of her professional commitments, Lydia enjoys exploring vegetarian culinary delights, music, and theatre.

 

 

About Yolande:

Yolande is a South African Occupational Therapy who studied at the University of Cape Town and graduated in 2017. Yolande has worked across the lifespan specialising in various areas of OT including hand therapy, cancer rehabilitation and lymphoedema management but her true passion lies in paediatrics.
Yolande has continued to build her knowledge in various paediatric models and has a special interest in supporting families and patients with complex needs. Yolande currently works as a Senior Occupational Therapist at Motion Health Kids Therapy support a small team of allied health clinicians.
Yolande is a qualified lymphoedema therapist, has completed complex hand therapy training, has completed multiple paediatric relate courses and has relevant experience working in the NICU.
To know one life has breathed easier, is to know that she has lived.
